The Powerball Lotto management increased the odds against winning, reconfiguring in 2015 from 1 in 175 million to 1 in 292 million. Doing so ensured a long streak of draws without a first-prize winner, so the pot could rise to the billions by enticing more people to play. There have only been nine jackpots to ever top $1 billion since both Mega-millions and Power-ball began decades ago.
Now let’s shift gears to contemplate the tremendous odds against a sustainable universe coming into existence with all the precisely defined conditions necessary for sustaining human life.
“If the number were written out, with every zero being 10-point type, it would be longer than the diameter of our whole solar system.”
Why would an Intelligent Designer want to meet those humungous odds against human existence?
At this point, one has to suppose there are four major reasons for such cosmic extravagance:
1. Engineering the universe with minute precision so that its molecules and atoms would sustainably support life posed a nearly impossible challenge that could not be ignored.
2. The final product would have to support higher sentient beings that could appreciate its cosmic consciousness, enticing some to bet that their personal suffering held a much higher purpose.
3. The odds being so high against winning life’s immortal crown, every once in a while, a few saints would emerge on the scene, gambling recklessly with their whole being to gain the ultimate prize.
4. A lonesome Creator hungered close fellowship with those few who could win the crown of life.
“Narrow is the gate and few who enter therein …” Matt 7:13-14
Atheistic scientists who know how to calculate those immense odds see the light these days.
