We all have family and friends who have utter disgust for Trump’s abrasive criticisms, his misogynistic innuendoes, his multiple marriages, his sexual liaisons, and questionable business dealings culminating in conviction as a felon, and his being twice impeached. This dis-ease is called Trump Derangement Syndrome, TDS. All these many indications of a flawed personality should have disqualified him from becoming the next U.S. president. TDS was supposed to stop him. But it did the exact opposite.
Of course, personal integrity matters to many voters, and it’s not unreasonable for citizens to weigh character alongside policy performance. But history shows us that great achievements have often come from deeply flawed individuals, and Trump is hardly an exception to that rule. Trump’s bitter opponents are learning the hard way that judging a political candidate by his personality and appearance is not a reliable indicator of stellar prowess.
“The Orange Man” is still a favorite for a Trump putdown by media pundits. But so was Abraham Lincoln’s tall, ungainly appearance, particularly his perceived “backwoodsman” look, drawing criticism and even offending people, especially during his early political career. But his legacy is second only to George Washington’s.
As for Trump’s bedroom liaisons, revered figures like John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Franklin D. Roosevelt had theirs also, yet left admirable legacies. Many transformational leaders have had controversial personal lives—but they were still capable of bold leadership, visionary thinking, and lasting reforms.
The American public has often drawn a line—consciously or not—between a leader’s private moral behavior and his public performance:
· JFK: Widely admired for his charisma and leadership during the Cuban Missile Crisis and civil rights, yet his infidelities and affairs were well-known in Washington and have since been well-documented.
· Martin Luther King Jr.: A moral voice for civil rights and justice, but FBI surveillance revealed marital infidelity, which was used to try to discredit him. Still, his public impact is regarded as monumental.
· FDR: Architect of the New Deal and wartime leadership, yet he had a long-term extramarital relationship with Lucy Mercer and kept Eleanor Roosevelt at emotional and political arm’s length.
These leaders’ moral failings did not erase their historical importance and legacy. In fact, many Americans ultimately judged them based on their vision, achievements, and the changes they created, not by their personality flaws.
Whether one loves or loathes Trump, it’s undeniable that his revolutionary presidency has been and is becoming dynamically consequential—and in that vein, he may well join the ranks of our nation’s all-too-human, but historically impactful leaders.
As a result, many of his die-hard Democrat opponents are in embarrassed disarray from having legislated: financial support for illegals and MS13 immigrant criminals; pushing dysphoric transgenders into female sports; for defunding the police that resulted in rampant arson and looting; and promoting pornographic ‘show and tell’ in elementary schools. The news reports discovering many of these legislative atrocities goes on and on.
To reverse such divisive legislation installed over the last 25 years by the progressive/liberal Clinton, Obama, and Biden administrations, Trump has issued more revolutionary Executive Orders than all previous presidents.
Despite his misogynist label, Trump has appointed more women in key government positions than any previous president.
Despite his non-denominational affiliation, he has supported the Catholic Church’s stand against abortion, unlike Biden’s diluted Catholicism, by defunding Planned Parenthood. In his previous presidency, Donald Trump appointed a conservative majority in SCOTUS that over turned Rose versus Wade . . . reflected by U.S. Catholics favoring Trump over Harris by an 18-point margin—the biggest gap in the past two decades.
Bill Maher jokes about the Dems going bonkers over all their progressive setbacks by unleashing extreme profanities in public forums, as if to add authenticity, but more offensive than Trump’s abrasive ”telling it like it is.”
If this keeps up, despite all his personality flaws, President Donald Trump may well become a living legend, immortalized on Mt Rushmore.
